Startups are always a gamble. Committing time and energy to your idea is a bit like rolling the dice. VolunteerLocal never felt too risky, though, because it created opportunities for volunteers to get involved in their communities. And that’s exactly what HFS Scholars is doing with their annual Casino Night.
HFS Scholars is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the growth and success of high school students in the Chicagoland area. Created in 1992, it initially started as a scholarship fund, but has since grown to also be a mentoring service, partnering scholars with mentors who will help them in their academic careers and beyond. HFS Scholars also provides financial assistance and academic advisors to talented students from low-income families, allowing them to attend private high schools. It encourages these promising students and creates a support system for them throughout their high school career. Scholars are working towards college – and for many of them, they will be the first in their families to attend.
Every year, HFS Scholars throws their Casino Night, a major fundraising event that includes blackjack, craps, a raffle, and the chance to win a $10,000 seat at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. It helps to bring awareness to the organization, while offering some serious fun for their loyal supporters. “The best part of Casino Night is seeing the local community actively donating their time, effort, and money to help correct underlying issues within our city through promotion of higher education,” says Conner Murphy, Volunteer Coordinator for HFS Scholars. “Last year we had over 350 people attend.”
Whether or not you’re a cardshark, investing your time in HFS Scholars’ annual Casino Night is guaranteed to be a jackpot. The stakes may be high, but you have nothing to lose. Help HFS Scholars rock a full house by registering to volunteer today!
